The centre first opened in 2008 and runs from St Johns Hall on Pretoria Road.

The Romford Study Centre is unique, as every student is allocated an hourly time slot and the maximum number of students attending each hour is no more than 16. There is an excellent student to assistant ratio at the centre; there are four assistants working with 16 students and there are five members of staff including the Instructor.

younger learners under the age of six years old, where they can receive one-to-one instruction and guidance. Kumon caters for all ages and abilities, and the current age range at the study centre is from four to 14 years old; although there has also been a three-year-old student attending before. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
