You by no means have to take graded exams in order to progress unless you wish to; I teach many simply for the joy of playing, rather than exam progression. I enjoy teaching students of all ages, from children to people who have retired and long to learn, or are returning to the piano after years of absence. I do not believe that one is ever too old to learn the piano - it merely requires an individual approach.
